Common Questions

Zakat FAQs

Quick answers to the most common questions about Zakat.

View All 25 FAQs →
Who is obligated to pay Zakat?
+
Every adult Muslim who owns wealth above the Nisab threshold for a full lunar year (Hawl) must pay Zakat. The Nisab is calculated based on the value of 87.48g of gold or 612.36g of silver. Use our Nisab Calculator to check today’s threshold in your currency.
Is my home zakatable?
+
No — your primary residence is not zakatable. Zakat is not due on personal property you use. However, if you own rental properties, the rental income you receive IS zakatable. Investment properties held for resale may also be subject to Zakat.
Do I pay Zakat on my salary every month?
+
There are two valid scholarly opinions on salary Zakat. The traditional (Hawl) method: calculate Zakat once a year on whatever wealth remains after a full lunar year. The contemporary method: pay Zakat on each salary as it’s received. Use our Salary Zakat Calculator to calculate both ways.
Is Zakat due on cryptocurrency?
+
Most contemporary scholars hold that cryptocurrency is zakatable as it is a tradeable asset with monetary value. If you hold crypto above the Nisab for a full lunar year, Zakat is calculated at 2.5% of the current market value. Use our Crypto Zakat Calculator for an exact calculation.
Can I deduct debts from my Zakat calculation?
+
Yes — debts that are due within the next 12 months can be deducted from your total zakatable wealth. Long-term debts (like mortgages) are handled differently depending on your Madhab. In the Hanafi school, only immediate or near-term debts are deducted. The full Zakat Calculator handles this automatically based on your Madhab selection.
